Willowbank Raceway recently played host to one of the cooler drag events in recent memory. The Cruzin Magazine Nostalgia Drags are designed to recapture the drag racing spirit of days gone past. There are a variety of classes, and that meant there was some action for everyone: vintage bikes, front engine dragsters and even some nitro monsters!
Seeing full metal cars flying down the asphalt is truly something special that is worthy of keeping alive, it really makes you appreciate the heritage of the sport, and just how far drag racing has come in a short amount of time.
The organisers were aiming for a ‘family friendly environment’ and they certainly achieved that. There was no prize money for winning, which meant that entrants were racing for the fun of it, arguably what all racing should be about.
It was awesome to see street registered, street driven cars being well and truly thrashed down the strip. The standouts however had to be the nitro hot rods. ‘Psycho’ especially stood out, sporting plenty of chrome and that unmistakable old-school flavour.
In addition to the racing there was a Shannon’s sponsored Show n’ Shine, for owners to show off their machines without having to put them through the punishment of the drag strip. That’s not to say we didn’t get to see them in action, as during the racing break punters were treated to a mini cruise, with the show n shine entrants doing some laps.
This retro-style event is rooted deeply in history, a history that events like this seek to keep alive. Graeme Cowin was recognised for his contributions to that history by being asked to preside over the event as Grand Marshall. Cowin is best known for his ownership of Rocket Industries, as well as the Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car Series, so it’s clear drag racing runs deep in the Cowin veins. It was a nice touch to see a legend like Cowin acknowledged in this way.
The event was highly successful, plenty of cars and plenty of attendees. The next installment is already in the works for early 2017, so start gearing up now for the next blast from the past!
