Sydney Motorsport Park brought back the “good old days” of motorsport, playing host to decades of global motorsport history with Sydney Retro Speedfest over the June long weekend. It was a great chance for fans, young and old, to see cars that should be in museums on track doing what they were built to do.
The event featured some classic Formula 1 cars from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s which were driven by the likes of Alan Jones, Niki Lauda, Jack Brabham and Gerhard Berger. While not all cars took to the track, they were of display for fans to enjoy.
Formula 1 weren’t the only ones to have their cars on display. There were also historic cars from categories all over the world on track. Indycars and CanAm cars got to show off North American racing history, while Europe was on track with cars from Le Mans as well.
But it wasn’t all about the international cars, with some classic Australia motorsport history on track too. The Heritage Touring Cars showcased the 80’s and 90’s of Australian Touring Car Racing with Group A & C action. With famous Nissan Skyline GTR’s and Ford Sierra’s from the likes of Jim Richards, Mark Skaife, Glenn Seaton and Dick Johnson leading the way.
Group N and Group S were also on hand, showcasing a variety of classic Porsche 911’s, Holden Torana’s, Ford Falcon GT’s, Mini Coopers, Chevrolet Corvette’s and Ford Mustangs at speed.
There was also a good showing of car clubs on display over the weekend.
