You would think having done 50 Powercruise events it would be stale and dull and repetitive you couldn’t be further from the truth. Gup has never been man to rest on his laurels. He always finding new ways for Australia’s toughest street, exotic, track and drag cars to settle the score and leave the weak licking their wounds. And seriously what other event can you fist pump out the window while your mates drifts a blown Camaro. Its just nuts….
The biggest surprise this Powercruise was for the man himself Gup. With the most iconic powercruise car of them all “Elvis” being revamped and overhauled in secret while Gup was in the Us. Version 3.0 still has the single turbo big block under the hood while the interior, body and paint work is where this overhaul shines , with a retina burning house of color custom green hue.
The show and shine at Powercruise events are a great place to find some of Australias finest show cars with airbrushing, chrome and even more colors than the wiggles on acid could handle. One of the neatest street cars and making its Powercruise debut was Scott Paddy’s Datsun 1600. Packing chrome, leather and some serious hp out of the SR20 power plant this car really ticks all the boxes.
Another highly contested event within powercruise is the ‘Off Street Drags’. The entertaining part of the off street drags is all cars must be on the grooved tyre, run on a single tank of fuel, no burnouts can be done to warm the tyres. And the car can only be worked on between runs by the driver. Its a event where only the tough survive and some big scalps go out in the early rounds ….
One of the most exciting parts of this years event was the private track hire of Willowbank on the Friday night, It was free spectate and free to run for all powercruise competitors as well as anything faster than a 9.99 with doors. This has brought a whole new dimension to the night with John Cannuli’s mental pro street torana as well as Scott Porter with his newest chassis the 350z that was driven by Englishman John Bradshaw at the recent Jamboree.
Just another side show to everything else going on was the Burnout Demos during the day. The main burnout contenders had 20 seconds to go out and put on a display on the pad.. to headline the burnouts was Mick Brasher in ULEGAL,l fresh from winning burnouts unleashed and Summernats. One of the heavy hitters was Brad Piper in SHI774 putting on awesome demos in his Mounfield Motorsport sponsored Statesman.
Miss Powercruise… we never seem to mind shooting it :)..
With 50 3 day events down, The Powercruise team show no signs of slowing down. By providing a safe controlled environment for all this to happen they allow the fans and spectators to become part of the action by jumping in mates cars and now the Powercruise taxi that takes people for a couple of laps of the track in a NOS assisted 6L commodore driven by either 50 man himself Tony Harrison or Powercruise veteran Peter Karger… Another great part of Powercruise are the Cruising sessions where else can you line up run after run with nearly anything from a Mitsubishi mirage to a 2000hp Corvette burnout car and nearly everything make and model in between.. There really is nothing else on the entire planet like Powercruise.
Personally, I cant wait for Powercruise 51 at Perth’s Barbagallo raceway on the 9th, 10th and 11th of October.
