Speed Nation’s Ivica Glavas braved the weather at Phillip Island to bring us pictures from FP1 (free practice 1 for those not versed in MotoGP lingo). The morning started off cloudy but dry, however it wasn’t long before rain made its mark on the mornings sessions of the Superbikes and other support categories.
When the Moto 3 boys came out to play, the rain had just started to fall lightly, making the already tricky conditions here at the Island even more diffcult to navigate. To ride these machines in the dry here takes some pretty big cajones, but add water to the equasion and im not sure how some of these riders even sit on their bikes.
It was Nicolo Bulega in his Sky Racing Team VR 46 who topped the time sheets in FP1. He had over 4 tenths over compatriot, Niccolo Antonelli. Aron Canet was the third quickest for the mornings session. There was also a few riders who had offs during the session, unable to handle the slippery conditions.
In the Moto 2 category Jonas Folger rode the Dynavolt Intact GP Bike and was the quickest in the worst conditions for riders in the morning out for all categories. It bucketed down as I was standing in the thick of it to get these pics! Danny Kent in the Leopard Racing was 2nd quickest, followed by Johann Marco on the Ajo Motorsport bike.
In Moto GP class, Cal Crutchlow in his MCR Honda took top spot for FP1. Valentino Rossi managed to take 2nd in his Yamaha, with 3rd position going to Danilo Petrucci in his Octo Pramac Yakhnich. It was later deemed by officials that Valentino Rossi had done more than the 10 laps allowed on his Michelin Wet Tyre, thus he was penalised and his times go to the bottom of the standings. FP2 was cancelled shortly after as it was deemed too wet to hold safely, the heavy showers setting in again.
