Phillip Island in Victoria plays host to round 17 of the Moto Gp championship. Marc Marquez had been crowned champion at the previous round, but no one was letting up at this round as everyone wants to win at the Island, as it being the most favourite track against the riders. So everyone would like a win here marked against their name. With Melbournes weather doing what it does best. Rain in the morning on Friday was a great way to start for everyone……. not. But it ended up being just a local light shower and then cleared up for everyone. But on the Friday times it was Andrea Iannone (Team Suzuki Ecstar) at the top of the combined timesheets at the Michelin® Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, setting a 1:29.131 on his final lap to oust Danilo Petrucci (Alma Pramac Racing) from P1. Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) completing the top three made up of three different manufacturers. The biggest news of the Friday was LCR Honda Castrol rider Cal Crutchlow, He had a big off in Fp2 and busted his Right Ankle and would take no further part in the event and instead will be at the Alfred getting his ankle worked on.
Saturday was again had everyone looking at the skies, as the weather was the hot topic again. light local rains enough to wet the track on who ever is out at the time just enough to play havoc with everyone as cool wind and poss rain lay ahead for the riders. But it was Marc Marquez at the top of the time sheets for the Qualifying. Still on a charge after just being crowned champion. he wasn’t letting up for no-one and stormed to his 5th pole in a row at the Island. And in doing so, The Honda rider equalled Casey Stoners record of 5 in a row! Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) starts second next to Marquez and Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) takes the last spot for third on the front row.
Race day and what a day, From the previous 2 days weather the Sunday was welcoming sunshine ! With an estimated Sunday attendance of 36,600 fans, it was the highest Sunday attendance since 2012. Sunday race ended up being cracker from start to finish. Lap 1 saw Jack Miller take the led of his home Grand Prix, but was reeled in by Marquez on lap 2, with Dovi on his Ducati slotting into 2nd and Iannone 3rd pushing Miller back to 4th. On lap 6, Jonathan Zarco hit the back of Marc Marquez coming into turn 1, Jonathan Zarco come off at nearly 300kph and managed to walk away from the massive stack. Marquez also ended up retiring with rear end damage to his bike from the incident. After all the carnage this left Dovi leading from Miller and Iannone, with Maverick Vinales starting to make his mark and wanting in on the action. Once in front Vinales slowly pulled away from the pack to have a nice lead. In doing is Maverick Vinales had shaken the monkey off his back and Secured the win ahead of Andrea Iannone and Andrea Dovizioso. Maverick’s last win was Le Mans 2017 and 25 races since Yamaha’s last win. So an ecstatic Vinales will be partying after the podium celebrations. Local man Jack Miller finished 7th and top Independent Rider as well!! All in all was a great race.
