With weather being a major factor in the cancelling of some biggest events this year. Willowbank pulled out all the stops and welcomed blue skies and high temps for the Kenda Tyres Radial Warzs 660 Shootout. With last years inaugural event being a massive success there was nothing to do but bring 36 of the toughest and baddest radial cars back to settle the score over the 1/8th mile.
With radial racing still being quite new in Australia there’s a vibe and a excitement around the pits. This bracket is constantly moving forward with new numbers being laid down at most meetings , And while the racing is extremely competitive the atmosphere around the pits is friendly and inviting.
Extra prize money was on offer too. $500 for the Best Wheelstand, Best Burnout and the Most Consistent over the event. The highlight of the afternoon was Peter Sauer’s burnout, shredding the tyres on his blown HK along the complete 1/4 mile then backed up to race. And while he had some competition Mark Sugars took best wheelstand.
I think what makes this racing so exciting is how relatable these cars are to the common spectator. One of the heavy hitters in X275 is Terry Seng with his genuine HDT commodore, amazingly this car is driven to and from most meetings including travelling the 2200kms to and from Sydney. Unfortunately all the tunes in the computer were lost the day of the event, Years of work gone in a instant. Determined to race, Terry tuned the car between each run but unfortunately it was not to be. This car and Terry’s work scream of dedication and persistence to move forward in the sport and since this event has run a P.b of [email protected]
X275 breeds some wild builds and with engine and power adder combinations blown wide open there can be some wild match ups. With engines as small as the turbo 3rz of Kyle Vance taking the big turbo and nitrous V8’s round after round.
After a massive afternoon of racing Brett Benz in the Warwick paint and panel Commodore took the win with a string of 4.9 sec passes over the 1/8th mile. The next Kenda tyres radial warz will take part on the 11th of July at Queenslands Willowbank raceway.
